People often snarl, “Well, what do you chicks want?” when we complain about women being portrayed unrealistically in video games.
I dunno, I think Ellie’s a pretty decent example of what I want: A smidgen of realism from time-to-time, especially when a game insists that I take it seriously.
Last Of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic environment, and Ellie looks dressed for the occasion.
-She’s wearing (dirty, worn) clothes that probably keep her warm without overheating her, considering how much walking she does. No sign of the leather corsets or tight, tiny shorts that are in mysteriously ample supply in most games about the apocalypse.
-She’s wearing comfortable shoes. Not six-inch high heels.
-She’s not showing cleavage for no discernible reason.
-She’s not wearing make-up. Come on, people. The world has ended. Scouting for food and clean water = priority. Scouting for Maybelline = not a priority. Hell, if I was in charge of a post-apocalyptic band of scrappers and one of my charges came back with a bag of L’Oreal shit and a triumphant smile on her face, I’d feed her to my half-feral dog pack. And I would have a half-feral dog pack.
Just let your women act like human beings in the circumstances they’re handed. That’s all I ask, developer friends!
